Salvagnini vs. TPC: A Procurement Manager’s Raw Take on Press Brake Tooling

  • Choose Salvagnini (especially L3 fiber laser tooling) if: You value precision, faster setup, and consistent support for small orders. Ideal for aerospace, medical, or precision industrial parts. Expect to pay 20-30% more upfront, but TCO might be similar over 2 years.
  • Choose TPC (American-style tooling) if: You need maximum modularity, you have a high-volume shop with predictable orders, and you can absorb the setup time. It’s more cost-effective for simple parts where tolerance isn’t critical.

One more thing: check your HS code. For international orders (we imported some TPC tooling from a US distributor), the HS code for press brake tooling is usually 8466.10.00, but it can vary by country. I once saved $400 on customs fees by flagging that code.

And if you’re considering a 3D printer for drone accessories alongside your press brake: I’ve found that a top-rated model like the Prusa MK4 works well for prototyping, but for production, stick with your laser cutter and press brake combo. That’s a story for another post.
